Happy Duanwu Festival or Dragon Boat Festival! 端午节快乐。
The Duanwu Festival is a Chinese traditional and statutory holiday, it falls on fifth day of the fifth month. In this year 2008, it falls on 8 June. It is a public holiday for China, Taiwan and some other asia countries as well. In english, we called it as "Dragon Boat Festival" because this festival is related to a sport - boat.
This day supposely is to commemorate death of poet, Qu Yuan. of the ancient state of Chu, in the Warring States Period of the Zhou Dynasty. Qu Yuan committed suicide by drowning himself in the Miluo River due to Qin has conquered the Chu capital. So that, people threw food (dumpling) into river to prevent Qu Yuan's body being eaten by fish.
Somehow, people today will prepare dumpling (zongzi in chinese) and racing dragon boat to commemorate death of poet, Qu Yuan.

If I've not mistaken, I saw rock sugar or something like that added. Then there is "pandan" leaf. Wonder which nation or ethnic prepares it this way. I have not tried anything like this.
This looks good. Rock sugar? I can't tell what he is putting in there. Maybe scallion? Looks like lotus leaf rice to me.
I enjoyed your post, thanks.
